Capital and Climate Change team

About Us

The main aims for this area are to:

  • Develop and implement the Council’s strategies for responding to the requirements of the Climate Change Act, including negotiating targets for universities and colleges to reduce their carbon footprints.
  • Develop and implement the Council’s capital funding strategies for the university and college sectors to secure effective and sustainable spaces for learning, research and innovation.
  • Work with colleges and universities to help them secure investment in research and innovation in the low carbon industries.
  • Continue to drive forward the Council’s environmental sustainability work across both sectors.

Current projects

Scottish Institute for Re-manufacturing (SIR)

SFC is providing funding of £1m over 2014-17 to establish a culture of re-manufacturing in Scotland, by brokering academic support for businesses to deploy new technologies and processes, hosted and co-ordinated by the University of Strathclyde.

Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges (EAUC) Scotland

SFC provides funding to EAUC Scotland to support universities and colleges in achieving their climate change action plans, as well as commissioning periodic reports on carbon emissions in the college and university sectors.

College Energy Efficiency Pathfinder

We are working with the Scottish Government and Scottish Futures Trust to develop business cases to retrofit low carbon into existing buildings and to place a small group of colleges on Scottish Government Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs).

College NPD projects

The following colleges have secured funding under the Non-Profit Distribution:

  • Inverness College.
  • City of Glasgow waterfront campus.
  • City of Glasgow city campus.
  • Ayrshire College.
  • Forth Valley College.
  • Fife College.

University Carbon Reduction Programme

SFC provided funding for 3 major estate projects to reduce university carbon emissions:

  • St Andrews University: Guardbridge Energy Centre.
  • Strathclyde University: CHP District Heating Network.
  • Stirling University: CHP upgrade.
