Commission on Widening Access (CoWA)
The Scottish Government’s Programme for Government 2014-15 set out the ambition that a child born at that time in one of Scotland’s most deprived communities should, by the time she or he left school, have the same chance of going to university as a child born in one of the country’s least deprived areas.
The Commission on Widening Access was established to advise Ministers on how this ambition could be met. Its final report, A Blueprint for Fairness was published in March 2016.
The Commissioner for Fair Access, Sir Peter Scott, has published his second annual report to the Scottish Government.
Widening Access in the West of Scotland
As part of a wider response to the Commission’s report SFC provided funding for a research project focusing on widening access within Glasgow and the West of Scotland.
Aiming to better understand the effectiveness of current widening access activities in the region, the research maps existing activity and highlights gaps and duplication across the learner journey. The report A Blueprint for Fairness in the Glasgow Region [PDF] was published in December 2018.
