Equality & diversity

Recognising its leadership role in this area, SFC's work is underpinned by the core principles of equality and diversity. All members of the community wishing to participate in further and higher education have a right to fair, equitable and open access to learning programmes provided by colleges and universities.

Equality Act 2010

We recognise that an increase in access to these programmes does not necessarily decrease inequality between advantaged and disadvantaged groups. SFC, therefore, acknowledges that clause 149 of the Equality Act 2010 places specific obligations on us that are not only about eliminating discrimination. We also have to promote actively equality of opportunity and encourage participation in public life and services, eg by meeting differing needs and fostering positive attitudes.

Moreover, the strands of equality legislation relating to:

  • age;
  • disability;
  • gender reassignment;
  • marriage and civil partnership;
  • pregnancy and maternity;
  • race;
  • religion or belief;
  • sex; and
  • sexual orientation

require colleges and universities to take reasonable steps to do the same.

In this context, we embrace the Equality Act 2010 as creating a simpler, unified equalities structure to help support inclusive institutions.

This is reflected in the SFC Single Equality Scheme 2009-12, first published in July 2009. We published the SFC Single Equality Scheme 2009-12: 2010 edition of the Scheme to take full account of the Equality Act 2010 as passed.

Our first SFC Single Equality Scheme: Equality Action Plan 2009-12 and Annual Report 2009 to 2010 are both available here.

Equality Impact Assessments

Underpinning SFC's work is an integrated Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) process. This supports our consideration of how the work of SFC might impact upon different equality groups. A record of impact assessment results is available here.
