The £988 million General Fund for AY 2009-10 provided universities with a flexible funding stream - driven largely by formula - to support their core activities of teaching, research, and the infrastructure for sharing their knowledge and expertise (referred to as knowledge exchange or knowlede transfer) with business.
This fund included £666 million for teaching and £241 million for research and knowledge transfer.
Allocations from the General Fund capital budget of £80 million, to be invested in modernising and maintaining buildings for learning and teaching, are detailed separately in circular SFC/11/2009 Revised formula capital funding for higher education institutions 2008-11.
