Concrete given new lease of life through knowledge exchange partnership

Unused toner from spent cartridges can be put to good use as a waterproofing agent and pigment in concrete, thanks to research from a partnership funded by the SFC.

The University of Dundee and SME Moock Environmental Solutions Ltd found that the inclusion of toner ink successfully improved the water resistance of concrete, as well as adding a splash of colour.

Knowledge Exchange Case Study

Both partners have now met with a printer company which supply spent cartridges and a major construction company with a view to taking the research findings forward. The idea is also being considered for patent.

The Innovation Voucher Scheme has been vital to the success of the project and both partners feel that the scheme has allowed a step change to take place in using this material. It is envisaged that the partnership will continue in the future.

The knowledge exchange partnership was formed through SFC-funded Interface, which offers a free "matchmaking" service to connect businesses to academia.
