Improving the visitor experience
The Centre for Nordic Studies at Orkney College, UHI are collaborating with local SME Orkney Ferries to develop a DVD of the heritage of Orkney for the waiting rooms at ferry ports so that visitors have a better tourism experience.
Orkney Ferries operate between Orkney mainland and 13 of the smaller islands. Tourists often come off a ferry with no idea of the cultural context in which they find themselves or indeed of what they are looking at.
The collaborative project aims to evaluate the use of ferries as cultural space and to create a pilot DVD of Orkney's culture to be shown in waiting rooms and on ferries in the Orkney Ferries network. There is a large audience to be serviced - the short ferry journey between mainland Orkney and Shapinsay alone had over 65,000 passages in the year up to March 2008.
The project will benefit the business, Orkney UHI, and the Scottish economy by improving the
in-journey service to tourists and locals alike.
