Today is Ada Lovelace day – a celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and maths.
Ada Lovelace is sometimes referred to as the first computer programmer, and todayis an international celebration of women working in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) to create more role models for girls and women inthese male-dominated fields.
Across the country our colleges and universities are putting on events to recognise the contribution women have made in STEM. Ayrshire College are ‘Celebrating Women Programmers’. Edinburgh Napier, in partnership with Equate Scotland, are holding an event this evening in which Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock will outline her approach to encouraging everyone to take up these subjects.
Not only are the numbers of women working in STEM sectorslow, their contributions are all too often overlooked in our classrooms. That’s why we fund the Higher Education Academy to conduct a project to Embed Equality and Diversity in the Curriculum and why we’re developing a Gender Action Plan.
