This week is Chocolate Week (12-18 October). Our Innovation Vouchers, which provide funding of up to £5,000 for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to work with academics to help develop their business, have helped three Scottish speciality chocolatiers.
Producer of “healthy” chocolates, IQ Chocolates, worked with Robert Gordon University and the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health at Aberdeen University to provide “scientifically credible” evidence of the antioxidant levels in their chocolates. IQ has also worked with Queen Margaret University in a project funded by SFC through the Sporting Chance Initiative which found that eating IQ Chocolate improved rugby players’ reaction time.
Dumfries & Galloway based Mayan Truffles worked with Queen Margaret University to develop diet and diabetic chocolates.
Highland chocolate specialists Cocoa Mountain worked with Abertay University to extend the shelf life of their luxury hot chocolate drink, which uses a paste rather than a powder, to make it a commercially viable retail product.
Our Innovation Vouchers have had a huge impact on sparking small business innovation, supporting an estimated 350 jobs and generating £17 million in economic growth per year.
