First Deaf Performing Arts Degree launches

RCS deaf performance degree

2 Oct 2015

The UK’s first Performing Arts degree course for deaf actors has started at the Royal Conservatoire.

The BA Performance in British Sign Language and English, which was made possible by SFC funding, has welcomed its first eight students, who are all deaf or hard of hearing.

The course was developed in partnership with Solar Bear, a theatre company specialising in drama and training for young deaf performers. The partnership was formed through an SFC Innovation Voucher, which saw Solar Bear work with the Royal Conservatoire to create a 10-week pilot deaf theatre short course, which led to the creation of a full short course and summer school programme and the development of the BA degree.
