SFC Chief Executive announces his retirement

15 Feb 2016

The Chief Executive of the Scottish Funding Council, Laurence Howells, has announced his intention to retire by early July 2016.

Laurence has been at SFC for almost 22 years, joining as Principal Funding and Policy Officer and progressing to become a Director in 1998. He became Chief Executive in 2014.

In all his roles at the Scottish Funding Council, Laurence has been energetic and creative in his commitment to education in its fullest sense. He has played a leading part in many of the innovations that characterise SFC’s work today: the introduction of outcome agreements, a simpler approach to college funding, our work on widening access and the establishment of Innovation Centres. Laurence was also instrumental in brokering the complex deal that merged 3 colleges into the City of Glasgow College.

SFC will begin the process of finding a new Chief Executive. Our focus during the transitional period and beyond will be on implementing our new Strategic Plan which is both ambitious and transformative.
