First Minister opens new Ayrshire College campus

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon shaking hands with Ayrshire College student

13 Dec 2016

Ayrshire College’s new £53m Kilmarnock campus has been officially opened by Nicola Sturgeon.

Over 200 guests celebrated at the ceremony on 12 December, where the First Minister described the state-of-the-art facilities as “absolutely stunning”.

The First Minister toured the campus with college chair Willie Mackie and principal Heather Dunk, meeting students and staff from all areas of the college.

The tour included a visit to the ‘You’ salon, the ‘Salt and Barrel’ training restaurant and the health and wellbeing centre. The First Minister met pupils from Cumnock Academy, who had designed the seating pods, and students and apprentices who presented her with gifts they had made.

SFC provided £50 million funding for the campus development.

The new campus was opened to students on 24 October 2016 and has already created opportunities for students, including apprenticeships and work placements.
