Winning Students swimmers heading to Rio

10 May 2016

Seven of the eight Scots swimmers selected to join Team GB at the Rio 2016 Olympics are or have been supported by the SFC-funded Winning Students sports scholarship scheme.

The British Olympic Association announced a 26-strong squad of swimmers who will represent Team GB in Rio de Janeiro in August. Eight Scots have been selected as part of the team, with all but one of them having received scholarship support from Winning Students during their career.

Since 2008, more than 125 gifted young athletes studying in colleges and universities across Scotland have been supported by scholarships of up to £6,000 a year plus the flexibility to train and compete while studying. The scholarships are funded by SFC and managed by the University of Stirling.

Current Winning Students scholars Ross Murdoch, Craig Benson, and Duncan Scott will be joined by their University of Stirling teammate Robbie Renwick, who received scholarship support throughout his degree at the University of Strathclyde.

This will be Renwick’s third Olympic Games, and his London 2012 colleague Hannah Miley, who was a Winning Students scholar during her time at Robert Gordon University, also makes an Olympic return. Camilla Hattersley (University of Glasgow) and Stephen Milne (Perth College UHI) will also join the team.
