Mike Cantlay appointed as new SFC Chair

The Education Minister, Shirley-Anne Somerville, has announced the appointment of Dr Mike Cantlay OBE as the new Chair of the Scottish Funding Council.

Ms Somerville said: “The Scottish Funding Council plays a crucial role in supporting the Scottish Government’s drive to achieve excellence and equity across the education and skills sector. Mike Cantlay will bring a huge amount of experience to the role of Chair and I look forward to working with him to continue to increase the contribution that our further and higher education institutions make to Scotland’s society and economy.”

Dr Cantlay is Chair of Scottish Natural Heritage and has over 20 years’ experience of public sector governance. 

The Scottish Government has also announced the appointment David Alexander, Mhairi Harrington and Professor Lesley Yellowlees as members of the SFC Board.

Welcoming the appointments, John Kemp, Interim Chief Executive of the Scottish Funding Council, said: “I am delighted to welcome Mike as the new chair of SFC and I, along with our staff and Board, look forward to working with him. He brings great experience in both the private sector and in public sector boards that will help us make Scotland the best place in the world to learn, to educate, to research and to innovate. I’m pleased that he will be supported by three new Board Members who collectively bring a mix of skills, knowledge and experience that will complement and strengthen the existing Board.”
