Scottish Overseas Research Student Awards Scheme (SORSAS)
The Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (ORSAS) was originally established in
1980-81 as a UK wide competitive scheme to strengthen the UK's ability to attract "highest quality" international postgraduate research students to the UK.
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) phased out funding for ORSAS over AY 2009-10 and AY 2010-11.
It is essential that the Scottish research base is enabled to continue to attract the highest quality international research students to Scotland to carry out research.
With the discontinuation of the UK-wide ORSAS scheme at the end of AY 2008-09, SFC is running a rebranded Scottish Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (SORSAS) in AY 2009-10.
For AY 2009-10 SORSAS has an increased budget of £2.8 million to enable new institutions to participate and to make SORSAS dynamically responsive to the levels of international high quality postgraduate research activity in individual HEIs. SORSAS will be included within the SFC's new Horizon fund for Universities (HFU).
