Stem cell research
The Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh was awarded a grant of £2.03 million through the Council's Strategic Research Development Grant in June 2006 to fund stem cell research over four years. The funding is helping to secure the positions of leading researchers at the university and to further develop research capacity by making key appointments in the field of stem cell research.
The centre's research is focused on the development of medical therapies for the treatment of diseases such as cancer, liver disease, Parkinson's disease, diabetes and spinal cord injury.
The centre is facilitating collaboration between all Scottish researchers in the area of regenerative medicine. In future, a Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service research team, who specialise in developing cell and tissue therapies, will be based at the centre to further enhance the research function.
