World's best electrical apprentice
An Electrical Installation apprentice from Dumfries and Galloway College has been named the world's best electrical apprentice at a competition held in Canada.
Richard Sagar (22) won the WorldSkills 2009 challenge in Calgary and is now officially the global leader in his field. Richard was one of 25 young apprentices from around the UK who were selected for the 40th Worldskills final after being crowned best UK Electrical Apprentice in June.
The competition is the biggest of its kind in the world and sets world-class standards in over 45 skill categories including health and personal care; construction; engineering; and IT and media. More than 900 apprentices from 51 countries competed and were watched by 5000 spectators.
Ian Johnstone, Electrical Engineering Lecturer at Dumfries and Galloway College, said: "We are all absolutely delighted for Richard, and so proud of his achievement. He has truly proven that he is world-class."
Richard competed against fellow apprentices over a five-day period to win the title. The apprentices had to pass practical skills tests based on real-life work situations, competing in purpose-built bays before thousands of spectators. Richard impressed judges with his technical skill and knowledge as well as his professional attitude.
