Last year (2016-17) was yet another successful year for the SFC-funded Winning Students sports scholarship programme, awarding 157 scholarships across 21 sports to help student athletes achieve academic and sporting success.

Winning Students supports around 150 athletes a year and over its nine year span has supported 543 student athletes through 1,229 SFC-funded scholarships.

Fourteen current and nine former scholars represented Great Britain at the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games, nine of whom returned with medals, and 98% of scholars recognised that Winning Students had helped them sustain or increase training volumes whilst at college or university.

Here’s what some of the scholars had to say:

“I am constantly astounded at the lengths Winning Students go to, to help the country’s sporting students, and I am privileged to be a part of the programme. I hope that I can make Winning Students proud and I am forever telling people (and other athletes) how beneficial the programme is.”

“Winning Students has had a phenomenal impact on what I could achieve this year – it’s allowed me to compete for my country 7 times, gain a world ranking and some international medals.”

“I think it’s a great programme that makes a huge difference to a lot of lives – it’s allowed me to continue my studies on to a masters and to progress my sporting career – something that I’d really struggle to achieve otherwise. Thanks very much.”
