{"id":41459,"date":"2020-04-28T16:29:01","date_gmt":"2020-04-28T15:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sfc.6bdv.ws\/blog-75551\/"},"modified":"2025-07-29T16:02:58","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T15:02:58","slug":"blog-75551","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sfc.ac.uk\/gd\/blog-75551\/","title":{"rendered":"What else does the UCAS Data Tell us?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SFC\u2019s Cathy Mitchell takes a closer look at this week\u2019s UCAS data.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sfc.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Upload\/New_SFC_Banners_News.jpg\" alt=\"Banner image for What else does the UCAS Data Tell us?\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucas.com\/\">Universities and Colleges Admissions Service<\/a>\u00a0(UCAS)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ae_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sfc.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Upload\/blog-12072019-main-image.jpg\" alt=\"Students\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On Thursday 11 July, UCAS published its latest report on applicants and applications from the 2019 UCAS Undergraduate cycle at 30 June.<\/p>\n<p>The summary headlines were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>18 year-old application rate slightly down in Scotland.<\/li>\n<li>SIMD20 applicants increased by 3%, but at a lesser rate than the increase in POLAR applicants in England.<\/li>\n<li>The number of student nursing applicants in England has fallen 29% since 2016, the year in<br \/>\nwhich the UK Government scrapped the nursing bursary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But a closer look from a Scottish perspective tells a slightly different story. It\u2019s important to remember UCAS figures don\u2019t count the HE provision at colleges and in Scotland we deliver more than a quarter of all HE in colleges.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-year old application rate is one specific measure. Overall applicant numbers were down across the UK \u2013 in England by 1% and in Scotland by 3%. See <a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/profile\/david.kernohan#!\/vizhome\/July30deadline\/IMDcomparison\">interactive data on all age groups here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SIMD20 applicants increased one percentage point to 16.6% &#8211; the biggest increase in one year (from 14% in 2010).<\/p>\n<p>Scottish nursing numbers have risen in the past two years, and are at their highest rate since 2010.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Figure 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ae_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sfc.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Upload\/Blog-12072019-Figure1.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Applicant numbers in Scotland are on a downward trend from a peak in 2016. While we can only<br \/>\nspeculate, this trend could be influenced by a number of factors, including the decreasing demographics for 18 year olds. Overall there was a decrease of 2,360 applicants from Scotland, of which 1,710 were<br \/>\n18 year olds (72.5%).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ae_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sfc.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Upload\/Blog-12072019-applicants-by-domicile.jpg\" alt=\"Blog-12072019-applicants-by-domicile\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>SIMD by Age<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the increase in applicants from SIMD20 backgrounds, the difference in trends across ages is notable \u2013 with much of the increase coming in the over 20s (<a href=\"https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/profile\/david.kernohan#!\/vizhome\/July30deadline\/IMDcomparison\">Interactive data on all ages groups<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ae_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sfc.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Upload\/Blog-12072019-SIMD-by-age.jpg\" alt=\"SIMD by age\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The older applicants are much more balanced across SIMD quintiles, with 22.2% of applicants aged 20 and over from SIMD20, compared to 11.3% of 18 year old\u00a0applicants and 10.8% of 19 year old applicants.<br \/>\nSFC currently monitors and publishes data on this in the SFC Participation Indicators by age (under 21 and 21 and over) for Scottish HEIs and funds the Schools for Higher Education Programme (SHEP) to encourage more applicants from widening participation school leavers.<\/p>\n<h2>Applications to Scottish Institutions by Domicile<\/h2>\n<p>English Domicile applications to Scotland \u2013 up 1%.<br \/>\nScottish Domicile applications to Scotland \u2013 down 4%.<\/p>\n<h2>EU Domicile applications<\/h2>\n<p>EU domicile applications to Scottish institutions \u2013 down 2%.<br \/>\nEU domicile applications to English institutions \u2013 up 3%.<br \/>\nEU domicile applications to Welsh institutions \u2013 down 14%.<br \/>\nEU domicile applications to Northern Ireland institutions \u2013 down 6%.<br \/>\nOverall EU domicile applications to UK up 1%.<\/p>\n<h2>Ethnicity<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Applicants by Ethnic Group: Scotland<\/strong><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><strong>Number\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>% of Applicants\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>% Change on 2018<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Asian<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\u00a02,320<\/td>\n<td>5%<\/td>\n<td>0%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Black<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\u00a0950<\/td>\n<td>2%<\/td>\n<td>1%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Mixed<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\u00a01,000<\/td>\n<td>2%<\/td>\n<td>3%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>White<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\u00a042,040<\/td>\n<td>90%<\/td>\n<td>-4%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Other<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\u00a0390<\/td>\n<td>1%<\/td>\n<td>22%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Gender<\/h2>\n<p>Women made up 62% of Scottish Domicile (SD) applicants.
