Scottish KE Awards finalists announced

The Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards, run by SFC-funded Interface, recognise and celebrate the achievements of collaborative business and academic partnerships.

The thirteen projects and three individuals shortlisted collectively worked with eight Scottish universities.

The finalists are across five categories: Innovation of the Year; Building Skills through Knowledge Exchange; Social and Environmental Impact; Multiparty Collaboration; and Outstanding Contribution to Knowledge Exchange.

Finalists include:

• Dolce Stil Novo Sound and University of Strathclyde for developing the Tone Magnet, a device to enrich the sound of an electric guitar (Innovation of the Year).
• Dr Hassan Al-Budairi, KTP Associate of the School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, for a project to protect railway lines by better designed rock fall fences (Building Skills through Knowledge Exchange).
• Dornoch Environmental Enhancement Project (Glenmorangie Company, Heriot-Watt University and the Marine Conservation Society) which aims to restore native European oysters to the Dornoch Firth (Social and Environmental Impact).

Dr Stuart Fancey, Director of Research and Innovation at the Scottish Funding Council and one of the judges for the awards, said: “The calibre of entries to this year’s awards was very impressive – as was the diversity. From collaborations involving small businesses to our national health service, today’s shortlist reveals an exciting range of business-academic partnerships. The Scottish Funding Council is delighted to see universities and innovation centres playing such a strong role in the successes of Scotland’s businesses and public sector.”

The awards ceremony is on 22 February in Edinburgh and includes a diverse range of speakers from business, academic and knowledge exchange.
