Building on Scotland’s established strengths in quantum science and technology, Quantum ARC seeks to catalyse the development of quantum technologies in Scotland for the benefit of society.

Host institution: University of Glasgow

With partners and collaborators from the following Scottish universities so far:

  • University of Strathclyde
  • Heriot-Watt University
  • University of St Andrews
  • University of Edinburgh

By directly using the remarkable properties of quantum-mechanics, quantum technologies could provide breakthroughs in a range of areas from sensing and imaging, to computing and communications. By leveraging the quantum world, these technologies could enhance areas from medical diagnostics to zero-carbon energy production.

Building on Scotland’s established strengths in quantum science and technology, this ARC seeks to catalyse the development of quantum technologies in Scotland for the benefit of society. By bringing together a broad range of stakeholders from academia and industry, to end-users and next-generation quantum workers, this ARC seeks to connect societal challenges to quantum-enabled solutions, build the skillbase needed to realise the benefits of quantum technologies, and ensure the responsible development of quantum technologies for maximal societal benefit.

We are seeing rapid and remarkable developments in using quantum-mechanical features of the world to enable practical technologies, with Scotland being a key player in this progress.

The key to realising the potential benefits of such technologies is a holistic approach which creates dialogue between market-driven challenges; cutting-edge research – including in subjects such as the arts, humanities, and social sciences – and wider society.
