PGR Advisory Group - 28 September 2022

The SFC Advisory Group on Supporting Scotland’s Postgraduate Researchers met for the first time on 28 September 2022 via a virtual Teams meeting. The focus of this meeting was to introduce group members, start initial discussions around the ambitions and remit of the group, and to gain background information on SFC’s Research Postgraduate Grant (RPG).

The group discussed:

  • Ways in which they will support each other through this work.
  • Key issues currently facing postgraduate researchers (PGRs) in Scotland.
  • Key outcomes the group hope to achieve in their work.
  • Examples of good practice in relation to the PGR experience that the group could learn from.

The group also provided comments on a draft Terms of Reference and a Code of Conduct for working together.

In the latter part of the meeting, SFC colleagues provided an overview of the nature of the Research Postgraduate Grant, how it is allocated and why SFC is interested in exploring it further. This presentation and initial discussion will inform the focus of the next meeting in December: a “deep dive” discussion around the Research Postgraduate Grant, with a focus on purpose, principles and accountability.
