SFC has been working with sparqs (student partnerships in quality Scotland) on evaluating and enhancing the student experience and student partnership through revising and updating its partnership staircase model and student learning experience tool.

This workstream aims to develop the model and tool and supporting resources into a key sector reference point for use in the TQEF.

Key questions

  • What does an effective student learning experience look like and how do we evidence it?
  • What does student partnership look like and how do we evidence it?
  • How can we ensure that we continue to build on our reputation for meaningful student partnership and continue to move forward?

Lead agency

The lead agency for this project is sparqs.

Progress update

Sparqs conducted extensive consultation across colleges and universities during AY2022-23 to develop the Student Learning Experience (SLE) principles. These principles have now been converted into questions following feedback from the sector to enable them to be used as valuable prompts for constructive conversations. This SLE model was launched by sparqs in October 2023.

The Student Partnership Model continues to be developed, which will provide draft descriptors of student partnerships roles in internal quality processes.

Both models will be integral to all aspects of tertiary quality assurance and enhancement, so several sector meetings have been initiated to discuss the ways in which they can be embedded in the other workstreams. This includes initial conversations with QAA Scotland on student engagement in future tertiary sector enhancement activity, the Tertiary Enhancement Topic, and the future external review method.

Next steps

The Student Partnership Model will continue to be developed and refined in response to feedback from the pilot activities, including the SEAP pilot.
