World-leading research is one of SFC’s strategic outcomes. As described in our strategic plan, Scotland will nurture, develop and train the international research leaders and Nobel Laureates of tomorrow.

SFC Saltire Emerging Researcher Scheme

In 2021 the Saltire Research Awards formed part of the Scottish Government’s £6.75 million commitment to supporting discovery and innovation in Scottish universities. They were designed to maintain and strengthen Scottish-European research collaboration.

As part of the initiative, 142 exchanges took place within the SFC Saltire Emerging Researcher Scheme. During the programme, Scottish- and European-based post-graduate and early career researchers undertook exchanges between Scotland and 21 European countries.

Mapping the Scottish PGR Landscape

Our Mapping the Scottish PRG Landscape report provides a basis for a better understanding of postgraduate training and support as well as a record of PGR experiences.

SFC Advisory Group on Supporting Scotland’s Postgraduate Researchers

The SFC Advisory Group on Supporting Scotland’s Postgraduate Researchers  advises SFC as it explores opportunities for supporting postgraduate researchers in Scotland that could be harnessed by a national approach.

We are committed to ensuring the best possible environment for the development of early career researchers and postgraduate students.

We give universities the Research Postgraduate Grant (RPG) to invest in the environment for high quality research training and development, and to enhance the contribution of postgraduate research students to the research base in Scotland.

UK Wide Initiatives

We are committed to the following UK wide initiatives supporting researcher development. We work closely with other bodies across the UK to ensure these are implemented efficiently and effectively.

Concordat to Support Research Integrity

The Concordat provides a clear statement about the responsibilities of researchers, employers and funders of research in maintaining high standards of integrity in the conduct of research.

Concordat for Engaging the Public with Research

This Concordat is a set of principles to encourage public engagement to boost the social and economic impact of research. It was drawn up by the organisations that fund research in the UK.

Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers

This Concordat is a statement setting out the expectations and responsibilities of researchers, their managers, employers and funders in relation to career development. It aims to increase the attractiveness and sustainability of research careers in the UK and to improve the quantity, quality and impact of research for the benefit of UK society and the economy.

Researcher Development Concordat Action Plan

This Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee paper [PDF] was an update on progress against the SFC’s Researcher Development Concordat Action Plan and revisions to the action plan in the light of planned Review implementation work.

Careers in Research Online Survey (CROS)

The Careers in Research Online Survey (CROS) gathered the anonymous views of research staff in UK higher education institutions about their experiences, career aspirations and career development opportunities.

Principal Investigators / Research Leader Survey (PIRLS)

Complementary to the Careers in Research Online Survey (CROS), the Principal Investigators and Research Leaders Survey (PIRLS) gathered anonymous views and experiences from principal investigators in relation to their role as managers and leaders of researchers and research groups.
